Sarahkate, hay is extremely expensive here. I pay over $20 a bale for alfalfa from usually Nov. to Mar. or April. E. WA grass hay is even more expensive. Alot of hay suppliers will give you a break if buy a semi load at a time (approx. 23 to 25 tons), but really not too much of one. During spring and summer alfalfa will drop to about $16 or so a bale for the 100 pound alfalfa. I don't know who told you it was $8 a bale but it hasn't been that low in well over 4 years.

The problem this year is the weather. The E. WA first cutting was trashed with the rain and late snow. They had a few days of good weather so a lot of people cut but then did NOT have time to bale before the weather hit again. The hay rotted in the fields. Since the weather is still crazy most suppliers are thinking they'll only get one more cutting in, not the usual two. Which means a short supply for next winter and much higher prices to meet the demand.

I too buy Nutrena products and the price per 50# bag has gone up $3.50 in the last week alone. The average price is $19.95 give or take for any of their products.

It is scary. I don't forsee any changes right off either. Good luck with your new position.

I read on the ABn forum that hay in Washington was extremely expensive and hard to get - I think you posted that entry - I am scheduled to take over as mgr of a new equestrian facility in northwest Washington next month and the owner hasn't indicated bad problems getting or affording hay - and I've asked. What is the real story here? This is scheduled to be a private lesson barn with saddleseat equitation focus andnow I'm really getting pretty worried. I was told alfalfa 100 lb bales were around $8 and eastern WA grass hay hundred pounders were around 7 to 8. I'm a big fan of Nutrena Life Design feeds and they cost me in Oregon around $16 for a 50 lb bag. I was told by Nutrena corporate that the prices of their feeds are cnsistent across the US with small variations, now I'm hearing that a lot of feed stores are doubling the cost. Any feedback you can offer would be most appreciated! I want to keep my facility affordable for the family riders esp. equitation kids, but this is getting scary!
